The Many Things You Can Do With A Pumpkin

things to do with a pumpkin

There’s just something about Autumn that shouts “Pumpkin!” At no other time of the year are pumpkins used more often, and in so many ways, than in Autumn. They are loaded in every shopping cart, resting on every front stoop, and baking in every kitchen. Usually, the pumpkin takes the backseat to watermelons, strawberries, bananas, coconuts, and other fruits, but now, this humble orange pumpkin takes center stage, and in many different manners!

Go beyond the pumpkin pie and typical jack-o-lantern. Here are other neat things you can do with a pumpkin:

Décor: Have fun and buy pumpkins in many shapes and sizes to decorate your home all autumn long. From small white pumpkins to Cinderella’s giant “fairy-tale” pumpkin carriage, they’re inexpensive, easy to find, and available in many sizes.

  • Fill vases with tiny pumpkins and gourds for a simple table accent.
  • Tuck small pumpkins inside glass cylinders or canning jars.
  • Grab the kids and have a good time painting on a pumpkin. Draw silly faces, paint them all black to make bat-o-lanterns or all white to make little ghost lanterns, add glitter for the sparkle, or spray metallic paint for the extra shine!

Photo Prop:  Try gutting out the seeds and sticking your baby in a pumpkin for this cute photo opportunity that can be used as a Halloween or even Christmas card!

Candy Display:  Drill holes in a pumpkin and stick lollipops in them. You can bring it to your next Halloween potluck or if you aren’t home on Halloween, leave this on the front porch for the trick-or-treaters.

Bowling: Do you plan to host a Halloween Party? Need ideas on what to do? Try having the kids play pumpkin bowling! Find the roundest pumpkin you can, remove the stem, and use it as your bowling ball. It will never quite roll straight, but that’s the fun part!

Talking Pumpkin:  Eeek it’s alive! Make a jack-o’-lantern talk using an old baby monitor. Place the parents’ unit inside the pumpkin and speak into the transmitter whenever trick-or-treaters come by. Be sure to let your kids have a turn too!

Candle Holders:  Small mini pumpkins make great fall themed candleholders.  They can be used with taper candles, small votive candles, or tea lights.

Bird Feeder:  Turn your pumpkin into a bird feeder. Simply cut the pumpkin in half, clean out the insides, and hang it from a tree.  Put some small sticks for birds to perch on and fill with birdseeds.  Your kids will love making some new feathered friends!

Food Décor:  Use pumpkins as part of your food display:

  • Pumpkin Ice Bucket – Clean out a large pumpkin, fill it with ice, and let it serve as an ice bucket.
  • Pumpkin Bowl – Don’t waste pumpkins when they are the main ingredient.  Re-use them as bowls for your soup!
  • Creepy Guacamole – Use the pumpkin as a playful prop!  Make it look as if Mr. Jack is throwing up guacamole!
  • Serving Plate Display – Cut off the top of the stem and place serving trays on top.
