Mission Possible: Organize Your Child’s Closet

Doesn’t it seem like your child’s room just gets tinier and tinier? Or to better phrase it, more cluttered? As you walk around the store, do you often have “impulse purchases?”

“Oh my gosh that’s so cute! This too!”

By the time you notice, your child is wall to wall filled with Curious George t-shirts, Lightning McQueen pajamas, Thomas the Train books, Pillow Pets, and the list goes on and one.

Compounded by your in-laws coming to visit, bringing with them the brightest shirts and sweaters, largest stuffed animals, and toys, toys, toys, your child’s room is fighting for floor space!

What’s the instinctive solution to this? Let’s stuff it all in the closet, that’s what it’s for right?! That’s partly true, but there is a method to the madness. How you organize your closet, and how you “stuff” things in the closet, will help save you from questions like:

“Where’s the missing sock?”
“Where’s your Curious George shirt?”
“Where’s the matching headband?”

Take a deep breath, Auntie K is here to help.

The number one thing to keep in mind is to be patient; you cannot win this fight overnight. This is a series of daily battles. Win the battles, and you’ll win the war!

The underlying theme to help keep your closet organize is to engage your child in the task. Empower your child to organize. To help with this, get down to your child’s eye level. Look at their space, storage, and belongings from their point of view. Make the closet easily accessible for your child so that when it is time to put away their toys, they will have no trouble doing so.

  • Try removing the closet doors entirely. This will provide easy access for your little ones.
  •  Lower the clothing rods and invest in child-sized hangers.
  • Use floor-level open containers to hold toys.
  • Use  floor-level open baskets to store socks, underwear, and other loose items.
  • Use drawer organizers to store small items like headbands, bows, ties, and other small accessories.
  • Have fun and be creative. You can use colors and patterns to make the closet fun for your child. If you can somehow make tidiness fun, your organization problems will be at a minimum.
